College basketball season is one of the best times of the year because of the volume of action available. We have another card on Monday with games starting in the early afternoon and ending in the event. A morning matchup between Northern Colorado and Montana at 11:00 a.m. is expected to get us going.
Fingers crossed that it isn’t another postponement. There are currently six games that have already been called off and likely more to be added to that list. Only one ranked team is scheduled on Monday, as West Virginia travels to Stillwater, Oklahoma for a meeting with the Oklahoma State Cowboys.
I am not concerned with what is happening in Stillwater, but have a vested interest in Fresno, California. Along with Fresno, I have a selection in Charleston for the Winthrop Eagles and Charleston Southern Buccaneers. Yesterday was a successful day, with two selections and two winners on the college hardwood.
The Wyoming Cowboys and Fresno State Bulldogs are scheduled to tip-off at 6:00 p.m. PST at the Save Mart Center. This is the second of a two-game series between the Cowboys and Bulldogs in Fresno. Wyoming handled Fresno State by a score of 78-74 thanks to a standout performance from forward Hunter Thompson.
Wyoming advanced to 7-1 on the season with the win. The Mountain West Conference is highly competitive, with San Diego State, Colorado State, Nevada, Utah State, Wyoming, and Boise State all off to quick starts. San Diego State is the favorite to win the Mountain West, but look beatable after a 70-67 loss against Colorado State on Saturday.
Fresno State goes into Monday with a mark of 2-3. A disappointing start, but they shouldn’t be surprised by anything Wyoming tries to do on Monday, especially defensively where the Cowboys have struggled immensely. Wyoming can score, though, as the Bulldogs noticed in the first meeting. Head below for our free Wyoming vs. Fresno State pick for January 4, 2021.

If Wyoming decides to play defense at some point this season, they could be in business in the Mountain West. Statistically, Wyoming has scored with some of the best teams in the NCAA. The Cowboys have scored an average of 84.6 points per game for 23rd in the nation. They came just short of making it four straight games with at least 80 points scored in their 78-74 win over Fresno State.
It’s also only the second time in eight games that Wyoming hasn’t scored more than 80 points in an outing. Wyoming exploded in the second half against the Bulldogs, as they found a hole and exploited it. They racked up 47 points to outscore Fresno State 47-41 in the second.
Fresno State better have worked hard since that game to patch up the hole that Wyoming discovered or expect the Cowboys to pour it on offensively tonight. They have a couple of prolific scorers that could go off following a slow day in their recent matchup.
Marcus Williams, who is averaging 17.3 points per game, was held in check for 13 points. Hunter Maldonado scored just 13 points in that one as well to finish just below his average of 15 points per game. I suspect that at least one of them is going to have a big game after Hunter Thompson was the leading scorer on Saturday for the Cowboys. However, their defensive woes must be fixed before they are major Mountain West contenders.

Wyoming has conceded 74.3 points per game for 264th in the NCAA. Their defense has gotten them into trouble often this season, and it nearly bit them hard on Saturday against the Bulldogs. Against Utah Valley, Omaha, and Fresno State in their previous three outings, Wyoming was touched up for 80 points per game. The total is slightly higher in this one than their last meeting after 152 points was scored, but it should still get there.
